About the Book    This is the story of John Barr; soldier, doctor and Canadian legend. From his humble beginnings on a farmstead in Lanark, South Eastern Ontario, to the chaos and confusion of the battlefield, John Barr recounts his life with warmth, compassion and humour.
His is a story of a nation at war, and his experience as a young doctor struggling to save lives on the frontlines of World War II. From the trials and tribulations of Kingston University´s prestigious medical school to Commando training on the rugged shores of England and the horrors of the D-Day landings; this is a story as only John Barr can tell it.
As both a soldier and a doctor John Barr witnessed first hand the devastation of war. From an Allied bombing gone horribly awry, to vicious street fighting in the port city of Boulogne, through it all John Barr worked tirelessly as a Canadian medical officer, treating the endless tide of wounded from both allied and enemy alike.
In his post war years, John Barr would go on to become one of Canada´s most respected military officers and physicians. His career would lead him from a NATO hospital in Cold War era Germany, to his days as a Commanding officer of the Kingston Military Hospital and extensive travels throughout Asia and the Middle East.
In the end, John Barr is truly a man whose remarkable life and career will both fascinate and enthrall readers. It is the story of a man who has clearly left an indelible mark on Canadian history.
