Life's brief trace on the graph of time
        Leaps up then dies with age away;
Hope and its spangled dreams turn gray,
        Ignored or maligned by each insulting day.

Spit on and sneered at by arrogant time,
        Disillusioned by love and friend, denied
The catalyst of god, we age beside
        the pitiless alter of science deified.

... His lyrics display exquisitely chiselled form. In tone and theme they recall Houseman; sad poems about rejected lovers, young men killed in battle, the uncertainty of life. But another voice, an almost boyish exuberance hymning the nativity of love, is distinctively his own.
