Front cover of An Answer for Pierre

A novel by Gretl Keren Fischer

This is the story of a man who, in the turmoil of our time, seeks to renew his spiritual moorings. Jacob Harald cannot accept the idea (so widespread at the close of the millennium) that objectively seen, nothing is either good or evil, and that to call things right or wrong is just a matter of social custom or individual preference. When he is confronted with fathomless corruption, he is driven to search for an ethical standard beyond the human. He looks to the new science for help. Can it be reconciled with his Jewish faith? Can it be that a powerful ethical imperative rises from the very depth of the cosmos? We see Jacob’s struggle against a background of human relationships: his marriage, the alienation of his children, and his harrowing friendship with the enigmatic Pierre, who sends him on the most desperate quest of this life.

Published June 11, 1999.

Reviews

One of the most profound novels I have read in a long time ... (written) intriguingly and eloquently.
An admirable naturalistic theology ... magnificent pages. Truly remarkable. A most unusual piece of work.

Roland B. Gittelsohn, Rabbi Emeritus, Temple Israel, Boston, whose books include:
Love in Your Life and Wings of the Morning

I really liked An Answer for Pierre, both in terms of the excitement of the novel, an intellectual and personal mystery, and in terms of the ideas related to science and religion ... very powerful ... would like to read it again.

Karl E. Peters, Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Rollins College, Florida,
Co-editor, Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science

This love story is also a searching look at the human condition. A beautiful work, both disturbing and reassuring.

Patricia Morley, whose books include: Margaret Laurence. The Long Journey Home
 and Kurelek, A Biography
