About the Book    Charlotte Moore, sixteen and just out of the schoolroom, accompanies her cousins Sir John Young, Governor General Lisgar, and Lady Adelaide Young from Ireland to Ottawa in 1868. Life in Canada is exciting, especially with the arrival of Prince Arthur, Queen Victoria´s favorite son, for a year´s military training in the northern dominion. In Ottawa the highlights are the opening of a new session of Parliament, horse-racing, tobogganing, shooting, the timber slides, balls in honour of HRH and visits to the elderly, orphans and the circus. Further afield, there are the London Exhibition, troubles in the Red River Settlement and a Fenian Raid. A special occasion for Prince Arthur is becoming a Chief of the Six Nations in Brantford, Ontario.

About the Author    Jennifer Cook travelled to Ireland, London, the Ionian Islands and in Canada, following in the footsteps of Baron Lisgar, as she searched for the man behind the offices he held as a Member of Parliament and Governor General. She hopes she has succeeded in conveying that he was a caring man, who believed in a strong future for Canada. She has followed history as closely as possible while writing this novel. Most of the events took place, and many of the characters were real people living and working in Canada who played a role in the busy life of the Governor General and those around him in Ottawa. Jennifer Cook lives in Ottawa not far from Rideau Hall. This is her third historical novel. The previous ones are Flight Across the Mekong, TSAR 1999 and An Iranian Mosiac, Trafford/Oliver Books 2003.
