About the Book is about cairns. On Monument Island in Lake St. Francis, Ontario, towers the oldest and largest one in North America, a monument of the 1837 Rebellion, built by Glengarry Highlanders who dedicated it to their commander, Sir John Colborne. Such structures provoke queries-why were they built, are they still significant. .. ? Neolithic and Bronze Age peoples made them. When the Israelites crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land, each tribe carried a stone from the river to pile on the shore as a significant reminder for their children. Our Ontario ancestors also built them. Each chapter of this book tells the story, with a photograph or two, of one of these remarkable but little-known stone records of Ontario history.

About the Author Marion Heath
Marion Heath (1931-2025) obtained a BA in English from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, a Masters in Religious Education from Union Seminary in New York, and a teaching certificate from Toronto, where she taught for some years. Her book Stories from Stones, published by Borealis Press, has descriptions, stories, and pictures of cairns in Ontario. She has also written The Competition in Russia, a story for Grade 9 studies, and many articles about cairns and other monuments.
